|Name:||Airlie Cait MacKenzie|
|Location:||Edinburgh, (Error in Linkification)|
Airlie Cait Mackenzie is a newly Embraced Kindred of the Toreador Clan. She was just shy of her 25th birthday when she was turned, and now just under a year following the ordeal, she is still trying to understand what living and walking as Kindred means, and especially how to survive the many dangers to her kind.
Airlie had a normal childhood, born and bred in the Scottish Highlands town of Dornoch, and she was the middle child of three. She always had a wonderful talent for music, learning to play an array of instruments from a young age that complimented her natural singing voice. After high school, she went on to college at the University of Edinburgh, and four years later graduated with a Bachelor of Music. She paid her way through university by giving music and singing lessons on the side, but when she graduated, she wanted to experience life as a performer and had no desire to continue teaching. She auditioned for a place as a back-up singer for American rock star with distant Scottish decent, Alistair Lamont, before he was about to go on a European tour and scored the gig after it was clear none of the others girls were any competition for her.
Fate stepped in, however, and before Airlie realised what was happening, she was swept off her feet by the mysterious rock star and he was the first passionate love affair she was ever involved in. She fell hard for him, and he for her, yet she had no idea that he was Kindred of the artistic and beautiful Toreador Clan. Alistair struggled with his feelings, wishing he wasn't as deeply in love with the beautiful red-haired singer, but it all took a turn for the worst one night when the passion and lust for her overtook him and he went a step too far, Embracing her during a heated night of sex, despite him swearing to himself that he would never lose control with her.
It took Airlie a few days after her death to turn, the whole time Alistair experiencing painful guilt and turmoil about what he had done for Embracing a mortal against their will was punishable with death under the laws of The Masquerade. He never left her side and when she reawakened, he told her everything and pleaded her forgiveness and secrecy. To save his life, Airlie agreed to keep his secret, but she struggled intensely to learn of the Kindred and how to survive as Kindred. As her Sire, Alistair kept her close and taught her all he knew. But in her struggle to adjust in her new form, Airlie began to blame him for what he did to her, becoming angry with him that was setting her into uncontrollable frenzies, becoming a danger to herself and others. The emotions she was feeling and the strain of the secrecy took its toll on their love, and they agreed to part ways so she could try to find her feet in her now immortal life. They vowed to remain friends and she quit her position as singer for his band and he returned to his home city, New York. It was hard enough trying to understand what she was now without changing her base every week on a musical tour. They didn't even keep in touch. With Airlie lost and trying to find where she belonged now, she moved to Scotland's capital city, Edinburgh, and got a job as a singer in an upper class piano bar owned by yet another Kindred, the venue's patrons being who Airlie often chooses to feed on when the hunger gets too much.
She only ever revealed her secret to one other person, long-time friend from college, Rory Buchanan. She knew Rory was a Hunter, and she risked her life revealing her secret to him, but Rory in turn revealed himself to be a liaison between the Kindred and mortal world, a human Kindred protector. He was also a Vessel to the Kindred Prince of Scotland, Ealasaid Loudain, who happened to be the Sire of his older brother, Logan. Airlie knew that, a few years prior, Rory had lost his older brother to cancer, but he told her that whilst the brain tumour had killed Logan, he had been brought to Ealasaid prior so that right before his heart stopped beating, she would Embrace him as per Logan's choice. Because of her affection and respect of Rory, Ealasaid took Airlie under her wing when Alistair had left and along with Rory taught her how to learn to live in The Masquerade.
But Airlie has never been able to get Alistair out of her mind. He haunts her mind and her heart, no matter how much she tries to rid herself of him. Upon Ealasaid announcing she was to travel to New York City to visit her dear friend and one time companion, Xavier Carlisle, Airlie accepted her invitation to accompany her and Rory on their trip. She just has no idea what she will do when she'll get there, or how she will handle being in such close proximity to Alistair again...
THE MASQUERADE & ITS CLANS
THE MASQUERADE & KINDRED
Within a vampire bloodline known as The Kindred, seven vampire clans are collectively joined, forming the largest sect of vampires called the Camarilla, and survive through the Masquerade, disguising themselves as humans. Camarilla policy is that vampires should try to fit in with and hide from the rest of humanity, as to easily feed on them. For this reason, they created a web of lies and misinformation, called the Masquerade, to make the public believe that supernatural beings like vampires could not possibly exist. The Camarilla also believes that the only way the vampire species can survive in these modern nights is if it unite. Any breach of the Masquerade by any vampire risks exposing the entire race. Both viewpoints are fundamentally opposed by the Sabbat, an opposing sect to the Camarilla. The Camarilla also enforces the Eldest as ruling class over the younger vampires. The seven clans of the Camarilla are Ventrue, Brujah, Malkavian, Toreador, Gangrel, Tremere and Nosferatu. When a human is turned by a Kindred vampire, it is known as the Embrace, the vampire siring the human to embrace them into their own bloodline.
Each city has a ruler, a "Prince" who enforces the laws of The Masquerade that govern them to protect their anonymity. A clan is a group of vampires "related" by blood; i.e. the vampiric equivalent of an extended family or lineage. A clan is usually a large group, acknowledged widely in the vampiric society. Each clan nurture their own characteristics and traits, and each clan has its strengths and weaknesses. Often the clans do not always get along with certain clans such as the Brujah and the Ventrue actually hating one another. Each clan within a given area has a representative, a Primogen, who is usually the eldest and most powerful member of the clan, who attends the leader or prince's advisory council. This status also grants the character social advantages and greater power than being a normal member of their clan.

The Toreador are some of the most beautiful and glamorous of the Kindred. Famous (and infamous) as a clan of artists and innovators they are one of the bastions of the Camarilla, as their very survival depends on the façades of civility and grace on which the sect prides itself. In the middle age, the Toreador were a member of the High Clans, and their numbers were made up of the same types that are common in the modern nights - minstrels, painters, poets and actors. The Toreador revelled in the Victorian age. The Industrial Revolution led to a phenomenon that only the rich had been previously afforded - leisure time. A heyday of theatre, music and art began in cultural nexuses like New York, London and Paris and spread throughout the globe. While the influence of the Church in people's lives (and consequently, the influence Toreador held over the church) waned, those Kindred that latched themselves onto businessmen prospered. Possibly the one thing most Toreador love with the exception of beauty is money, and it was now accessible from places other than the landed gentry of the time. While the Clan has had peaks and troughs, this was a time that cemented them as a true power in the Camarilla.
It is said that while the Ventrue are the mind of the Camarilla, the Toreador are its soul. The Toreador portray themselves as the vampires closest to the living breathing pulse of the humans around them (though this honour might be shared with the Brujah). They claim that this is what keeps them so vital and modern. Indeed, Clan members are often the first ones to be aware of what mortals are wearing, eating, buying and sleeping with. The weakness of the Toreador Clan is that the members of this clan are as much prisoners of their artistic vision and sensitivity as they are its beneficiaries. They are often overcome by the beauty they see around them, and become immobilized with fascination. Such things as paintings, neon signs, or even sunrises can captivate them. It requires a successful Willpower roll to break the fascination quickly; otherwise, the Toreador will stand, awed and helpless, for minutes or even hours. This trait explains why Toreador so often fall in love with mortals.
